I am a lifelong horse racing fan, and I have a doctorate in communication/media studies from the University of Illinois. Currently, I am an assistant professor of communication at the University of Tulsa. I also have a post-graduate certificate from the equine program in the College of Business and Public Administration at the University of Louisville. At the moment I am completing a book manuscript on interactive media and horse racing. (My previous book,
Site and Sound: Understanding Independent Music Scenes was published in 2003 by Peter Lang Publishers.) My research on new media and horse racing/parimutuel wagering has been published in journals including
New Media & Society,
Television & New Media,
The Journal of Sport & Social Issues, and
First Monday, and I have presented this research at national and international conferences. I serve on the executive committee of the Association of Internet Researchers (http://aoir.org), an international organization for researchers who study the Internet and related networked technologies.
